Three types of shungite

Type 1, Elite Shungite, is the rarest and purest form. Only 1% of all shungite found is type 1. It is 98% organic, non-crystalline, graphite, vitreous carbon, with a semi-metallic glossy silver-black mineral. He is also sometimes known as the Noble Shungite.

Type 2, Petrovski shungite, contains about 64% organic carbon, but can range from 50% to 70%. It is a blackish-gray color and is usually used in pictures and other objects because it is easier to shape and polish to a shine.

Type 3, black or common shungite, consists of about 30% organic carbon but can be up to 50%. It's black.

So is it just coal?

Since shungite is made up mostly of carbon, you may wonder how it is different from coal or oil. The answer is: time. Coal and oil were formed 300 to 500 million years ago, in contrast to the formation of shungite 2 billion years ago. This makes coal or oil compared to "youthful".
