What is Sciatica?

This condition is characterized by pain that shoots down the back of the leg and into the foot. The pain can be sharp and shooting, but it can also be dull and achy, or even feel as though it’s traveling up through the knee. 

You may also notice numbness in your foot or toes as well. In some cases, you may experience tingling in different parts of your leg. The pain associated with sciatica usually comes from compression of the sciatic nerve at an area where it passes through a thickened area of tissue between your hip bone and lower back. 

This condition is commonly called a herniated disc when this area is damaged, which makes it easier for a herniated disc to compress the sciatic nerve. Sciatica may also be caused by a small tear in the outer covering of your sciatic nerve—the myelin sheath—that’s caused by degeneration of the nerve fibers. 

This condition is often called a neuroma or neuropathy, and it can lead to pain in the leg when you walk or sit down.

In some cases, sciatica can be the result of an actual tumor on that part of your lower back. This condition is called a spinal cord compression tumor, and it causes pain along both sides of your lower back that becomes sharp when you move normally.
